Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI appointed His Grace the Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ranjith as the New Archbishop of Colombo on 16th June 2009.

His Grace the Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis was appointed on 06th July 2002 as the Archbishop of Colombo and then upon reaching the age of retirement tendered his resignation in accord with Can.401.1 of the Code of Canon Law and Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has accepted his resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese.

Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith becomes the 09th Archbishop of Colombo.
