His Grace Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith the Archbishop of Colombo will preside at the Solem Festive Mass on 15th of August 2009 at Madhu Shrine and His Grace Archbishop Emeritus Oswald Gomis will preside at the Solemn Vespers Service on 14th August 2009 together with His Lordship Bishop Rayappu Joseph, the Bishop of Mannar.
Already thousands of thousands pilgrims have reached Madhu Shrine and the government has done its best to provide all the facilities for the pilgrims.
Miraculously, a water spring has emerged in Madhu when the thousands of pilgrims were concerned about the water situation in Madhu after the war. Our Lady of Madhu has once again come to help of the people and she will soon wipe the tears of the people still held up in the camps after the war.
His Grace Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith appealed to the government to speed up the resettlement programme and help the people to go back to their villages and begin a new life.
Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith addressing the Felicitation Ceremony held on 10th August 2009 at BMICH, said, " We appeal to your Excellency to ensure that the process of pacification of the North and East of this country be expedited through an effective and fast moving program for the resettlement of the internally displaced people in the villages from which they originally came. Wounds fester when medication is delayed. Speed becomes a necessity for a thorough process of healing in this country. The Church wishes to join hands with all other fellow religionists in assisting any initiative that helps in this matter. Every effort ought to be made to avoid any and every form of exclusivism or rejection of “the other” from the concept of a true Sri Lankan identity."
" I also appeal to all international bodies and governments to be more pro-active in this matter, helping the government of Sri-Lanka to redevelop the devastated North and East of this country economically so that the Tamils and the Sinhalese here can find unity, a new sense of freedom, equality and dignity. There is no point in punishing further the poor and the suffering in the affected regions through sanctions economic or political. Sanctions cannot bring about healing. They can only make the situation worse for those displaced in the camps. Only a consideration of the question looking at it from the angle of the immediate humanitarian needs of those who suffer can help." |
