“ It is a part of the education not only to give knowledge to the children, but also to form their characters and to help the children to progress on the God given inner life to them. Unfortunately, today education has been politicized and commercialized. In those days, when it is the time for the admission of the children to the school, parents, father or mother takes the child to the teacher in the school. A 'bulath atha' - a sheaf of betel leaves is offered to the teacher or the school master as a sign of respect and reverence and worship at his or her feet by the child requesting the teacher educate him. It is left to the teacher to accept the responsibility or not depending on the student or the background of family. Education in this country was on such a higher esteemed level. But today, education has been institutionalized, commercialized and politicized and had brought to education to a challenging situation. Otherwise, no one will go to school and ask the teachers to kneel down in front of the students. Where it has happened in this world ? So discipline in the school has been deteriorated, since the selfishness had been the opportunity in this education system. Is there a discipline today ? There is no discipline at all. Politics should let off the education. It is after the school take over by the government in 1960, education system start deteriorating. Why is that ? Politicians entered the schools and interfered in the education and administration, and thereby they removed the religion and the discipline from the schools. They weaken the respect and reverence the teachers had. The position of the Principals was brought low. If the principal do not act according to the instructions of the politician, he is transferred within 24 hours. You cannot do this. In order to form and educate the children, to guide and correct decisions for the children, principal and the teacher should have the freedom. If the politician comes and interferes, the teacher is not able to fulfill his responsibilities, to lead the children in the correct path.” Said His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith addressing the gathering.

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, blessed and open the new building at Holy Family Convent School in Kalutara on 31st July 2013.

His Eminence further said, “ In Sri Lanka we have a society without discipline. We hear today, that one provincial council member goes and kills someone, another MP goes and does some other wrong doing….what is this political decorum of the MPs? It is these MPs who have started giving bad example to the society. I don’t say everyone is like that. But is this what we call progress in the country ? We talk about the Miracle of Asia. Miracle of Asia is not just constructing buildings and roads, The miracle of Asia is when you can set up an example according to the cultural traditions of this country, according to our religious beliefs and righteous life. This will be the miracle of Asia. Without realizing the esteemed nature of the teacher, if we drag the teachers and the children to lowered state, what will happen to the education tomorrow in this country ? Therefore, responsible politicians, political leaders should keep away from the schools. Politicians should not enter the schools, if you are coming to the school, come as a father or as a mother or as a benefactor. Politicians should not interfere in the schools or take over the schools, thereby transfer the principals and teachers whenever you want or to get the teachers to kneel down in the schools. These do not happen in a cultured, disciplined and civilized society.”
