His Lordship Bishop Emmanuel Fernando, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese, presided at the Catechists’ Day of the Colombo Region, at St. Sebastian’s College premises at Moratuwa on 28th September 2013.
“ Every catechist is a “pillar” for education in the faith in the Sunday School. Sunday School is not an ordinary classroom, but a ‘door’ for the children to enter into a journey of faith. This is your initiative and whole-hearted commitment you make to help the children to start a dialogue with the Lord. We sincerely appreciate your continuous work of teaching catechism to the children.” Said His Lordship Bishop Emmanuel Fernando addressing the Catechists on behalf of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo.
“a life that witnesses to the gospel, rather than presenting yourselves as “knowledgeable experts,” is the strongest way which attracts children to a life of faith. The more you unite with Jesus and make Him the centre of your life, the more He makes you to witness to your Christian life and open your faith-filled life to others. And never allow the spirit of the world to spoil the work to which you have been called. Your temperament and the way of talking and presenting yourself to the children and to your own teachers in the school, is more important. So we want you to maintain this spirit of unity among yourselves, to continue your mission entrusted to you.” further said His Lordship.
“ We have theme today, ‘the field of the catechist with the signs of the times’. Therefore, be aware of the difficulties and challenges of the times. We often meet couples preparing for marriages, not aware of the basic catechism of the Sacraments. They often try to prepare for the wedding with the procedures rather for the Sacramental married life. While thanking you from my heart for all that you do as a catechist, I urge you to be creative and find new ways to impart a stronger faith to the children and adults and inviting them also bear witness to the Christian life with a firm conviction “ said His Lordship Bishop Emmanuel.
