OPENING OF THE
BENEDICT XVI CULTURAL INSTITUTE

At the invitation of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena together with His Eminence Angelo Cardinal Bagnasco, the President of the Italian Bishops' Conference, declared opened the Benedict XVI Cultural Institute on 27th December 2015 at Bolawalana in Negombo.
Since 1948 the institution served as the Catholic Teachers' Training College, was a prestigious and viable training college run by the Catholic Church. Then in 1961 the government took in charge of the institute and thereafter in 1990 the institution was closed down. Again in 2003 institute was handed over to Catholic Church.
In 2013 the Institute was named as the Benedict XVI Cultural Institute by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo. Holy Father Pope Francis blessed the institution and the chapel on 15th January 2015.

His Excellency Archbishop Pierre Nguyên Van Tot, the Apostolic Nuncio to Sri Lanka, His Grace the Archbishop Emeritus Oswald Gomis, Auxiliary Bishops, several priests & religious, Ven. Kubiyangoda Gnana Dassi Thera, Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, the Speaker of the Parliament, Hon. Lakshman Kiriella, Minister for Higher Education & High Ways. Hon Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former Defence Secretary and several MPs, and several other distingushed guests participated.
