In a message release by the Bishop of Ratnapura, His Lordship Bishop Cletus Perera OSB, appeals for assistance for floods victims.
" Diocese of Ratnapura suffered heavy damages due to the inclement weather that lasted for the last two weeks. Both Ratnapura and Kegalle districts which constitute the diocese of Ratnapura are badly affected. Our diocese is the worst affected among other parts of the country with both floods and land slides battering our people."
He further says, " Our humble request,
- To provide immediate relief in the form of food and non -food items to the displaced Food items: cooked food and dry rations. Non-food items: Mosquito nets, medicine, mats, bed sheets, cutlery sets, clothes, school books etc...
- To assist orphan and single parent children in their education. There are about 94 children who have lost either both parents or one parent.
- To put up houses for those who have lost their houses.
- To support the people with livelihood empowerment opportunities
Kindly help our people to rise up and hope for a better tomorrow."
Very Rev. Fr. George Sigamoney, the National Director and the newly appointed National Director, very Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar Welivita visited Ratnapura diocese, held discussions, distributed relief packs to people in Gurugalla St. Francis Xavier's Church and inspected some of the sites where landslides took place in Panawala, Dehiowita. Very Rev. Fr. damian Fernando, the Vicar General of the diocese also joined the Caritas inspection tour. We met the Buddhist monk at the temple where a camp for the displaced is established and discussed their issues.
