“ Unite yourself with the Lord, as the Gospel tells us today, that ‘If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.’ The Lord is calling you like he called great saints to respond to His call and unite yourself with Him. Our Lord can perform miracles in your life. Learn the lessons from the life of Our Blessed Mother as you saw in the drama in the beginning, to accept the will of God for your life “ said His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm addressing the children gathered at Tewatta on the 64th Children’s Day in the Archdiocese, on 03rd March 2012.

His Eminence Malcom Cardinal Ranjith presided at the Children’s Day Eucharistic celebration together with the newly consecrated two Auxiliaries, His Lordships Bishop Emmanuel Fernando and Bishop Maxwell Silva. His Grace the Archbishop Emeritus Nicholas Marcus Fernando, Archbishop Emeritus Oswald Gomis, Episcopal Vicars, Rev. Fr. Indra Fernando Director of Catechetics, Fr. ManuKkumaran in charge of Tamil Section of Catechetics and several other Fathers and religious and a large number of children from Sunday schools and colleges participated at the Children’s day held at the Tewatta Basilica, Ragama.

A beautiful drama directed by Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando, Episcopal Vicar for Southern Region, was staged at the beginning of the programme, based on the theme of the day, “ O Mother Mary, You are yje handmaid of the Lord, and We are your children”.

The drama appealed to the children to listen to the call of God like Mary Our Mother and never refuse to respond to it, but to accept and think of becoming a priest or a religious to serve the Lord.

In parallel with the Children’s Day, the different Religious Congregations also made available information about their Congregations in different places assigned to them. The children took time to went around the Basilica to see the historical engravings designed and installed around the Basilica by His Grace the Archbishop Emeritus Oswald Gomis and also to see the new exhibition hall of Blessed Joseph Vaz.
