|Very Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar Weliwita, the Episcopal Vicar, and Very Rev. Fr. Merl Shanthi Perera, the Procurator General, co-presided at the Vespers Service, which commenced with the Rosary Procession. Holy Rosary was recited at the Old Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes and the procession proceeded to the Basilica.
Preaching at the solemn Vespers Service, His Lordship Bishop Maxwell said, " Today, Our Lady of Lanka has allowed us to experience God's abundant blessings on us on this holy ground at Tewatta. In today's Gospel, God shows us His unselfish love and care for us. We have seen this love from the very beginning of the creation. God gave this creation as a gift to the humanity. Even though man sins against God, God in His love, never abandon him. Our Lord, multified loaves and showed how much God cares his own peolple. God not only quenches our thirst, our physical hunger, but also our spiritual hunger. In this, God shows how God gives us much more than we need. God gives abundantly. He takes our small contribution and multiplies and gives us abundantly".
" Today we have to worship the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. God gives us his Lord, whenever we receive Holy Communion. What a special day it was when you and I received Holy Communion for the first time. But today we are aware how we receive Our Lord through Holy Communion. Is there a longing and love in our hearts, to receive Holy Communion ?"
