ANTI CONVERSION DRAFT BILL PRESENTED TO THE PARLIAMENT

[ Fr. Sunil De Silva - 07.01.2009 ]

The Anti-Conversion Draft Bill has been presented to the Parliament yesterday, 06th January 2009 by the Select Committee for approval.

As the primary objective of the bill is to prevent conversion of a person, from one religion to another by the use of force or allurement or by any fraudulent means, it is desirable to define the terms force, allurement or fraudulent means in relation to the primary objective of the bill

The Chief Opposition Whip Hon. Joseph Michael Perera had requested for two debates on it since it affects all religions, various organizations, political parties and specially the religious harmony in the country.

Jathika Hela Urumaya has been strongly urging the government and the parliament that the Anti Conversion Bill should be passed, but the Catholic Bishops Conference of Sri Lanka and many other religious dignataries have been strongly recommending to consider in appointing the Religious Council to settle the matters in a peaceful way.
