Caritas - SEDEC & HUDEC hands over 130 houses in Vadamaarachchi - Jaffna

130 houses were handed over to the Tsunami affected families at Vadamaarachchi in the Point Pedro DS Division on 4th March 2009.  The Chief Guest at the Ceremony was His Lordship Bishop Harold Anthony Perera, Bishop of Galle together with Bishop Thomas Savundaranayagam, Bishop of Jaffna and Very Rev. Fr. Damian Fernando, Director of Caritas, Rev. Fr. C. G. Jeyakumar, Director Caritas Jaffna-HUDEC.

His Lordship Bishop Harold Anthony Perera, the Bishop of Galle and the Chairman, of the Catholic National Commission for Justice, Peace and Human Development addressing the gathering said, " all the good work in the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programmes has not been completed in North and East due to the war situation and we have requested the international funding agencies to continue their support in order to complete the projects started for the Tsunami affected families in North and East. "

His Lordship Bishop Thomas Savundaranayagam, Bishop of Jaffna addressing the gathering said, " We have provided these houses to the Tsunami affected families and our next effort will be to serve the war affected people in Jaffna and Vanni and build houses for them. We are awaiting for the dawn of peace and bring relief to the suffering people of North. The time has come build the bridge from North to South for the dawn of peace. We are very grateful to Caritas Sri Lanka - SEDEC and our Jaffna Office HUDEC and all the donors for helping these families to find better and permanent shelter. "

Caritas Sri Lanka, National Director Rev. Fr. Damian Fernando said, " Caritas has built nearly 10,000 permanent houses for the Tsunami affected families. People of North and East were not only affected by Tsunami, but also they have been battered by the civil war for years.We are thankful to our international funding partners for supporting us in these projects."

In Jaffna District, Vadamarachchi East and Vadamarachchi North were badly affected with the Tsunami devastation amidst the civil war. Even the houses and property that were damaged in the war, were completely washed off to the sea. Caritas Sri Lanka - SEDEC through the commitment of Caritas Jaffna - HUDEC commenced the rehabilitation work which was extremely difficult due to the war and the security situation. Caritas Jaffna through the initiation of the Director Rev. Fr. C. G. Jeyakumar, has been able to complete 130 houses in Vadamarachchi area beside the other housing projects of the Caritas in the Jaffna district.

While Fr. Jeyakumar thanked and appreciated the generous concern of the Caritas Internationalis and all the donor, the Government Agent of Jaffna, Mr. K. Ganesh said," these people have lived a better standard of life in the past, even though they were victims of the Tsunami and the war.These new houses built by Caritas Sri lanka has given much needed shelter to live under roof.
